Driving Local Business, Jobs and Wealth

Breakfast Seminar - 13th March - Woodend

A unique opportunity to hear from one of the world’s leading authorities on local wealth creation and retention and community economic development – Michael Shuman (USA), with Civic Strategist, Larry Quick (AUS and USA). This breakfast seminar will address key economic opportunities and issues facing local communities like:

  • Understanding the deep economic need for local business success
  • Generating the conditions for well-paid employment opportunities
  • Creating a local economy that maintains a strong sense of place
  • How community can invest in local property and infrastructure development through Community Development Corporations
  • Achieving sustainable prosperity across the whole community

Participants will also hear about new initiatives in the Macedon Ranges based on the thinking of the two speakers.

Speakers

Shuman

Michael Shuman (USA)

Michael is a Fellow at the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE), Cutting Edge Capital, and the Post-Carbon Institute. He regularly undertakes economic leakage studies and assists communities to identify and establish job creation opportunities.

A prolific speaker, he has lectured for more than 30 years across 47 US states and eight countries. He has recently published his third book on local economies entitled “Local Dollars, Local Sense: How to Move Your Money from Wall Street to Main Street and Achieve Real Prosperity”. Michael is based in Maryland in the USA.

Quick

Larry Quick (AUS and USA)

Larry Quick has over twenty years of experience in working with communities in both Australia and the USA. Larry is unique in that he has extensive strategic experience in all four sectors of place – business, government, NGO’s and communities. These have been bought to bear in the development of the Great Place principles, process and practices that are being applied in Woodend.

Larry is the founder of Great Place Australia and principal author of the Resilient Futures Framework – a strategic framework that focuses on generating resilience in a way that focuses on change ahead of change and only calls for conventional resilience (bouncing back from shocks or change after change) when there is little alternative. He is based in Woodend, Victoria.

Getting involved in Great Place is easy. If you or a group within your community wants to get a local Great Place initiative up and running then there are a number of easy starting points or pathways. Each pathway is tailored to meet you where you are and then allow you to grow as you go. In nearly every case, a pathway can be customised to suit your specific needs – all you need to do is ask. With Great Place, no matter where you start and how many people are involved, there is always more to learn, new things to do and room to grow.

Once you are connected to Great Place you will have lots ways to join in a variety of learning opportunities including videos, readings, discussion groups, webinars and even more formal, face-to-face training sessions. Each learning opportunity will take you on a journey which shows you how easy it is to move from idea into action – action that really will make a difference both to you and your community. More importantly, in many of those opportunities you will have the chance to connect with other people who are on a pathway similar to your own.

Once you're connected, what you do is largely up to you, but if your next step is going to be about getting a Great Place program happening in your community, then check out our pathways and see which is best suited to helping you taking things to the next level.
